Mrs. Vijaya Bharathi, dalit women Icon passed away on 30-09-2024. She was 85. Vijaya Bharathi is a famous writer and she is well known for her interpretative writings on various characters in Hindu mythology. She was an author, a visionary and torch bearer of dalit women movement and she was former director of Telugu Academy.
All dalit organizations, women organizations and democratic organizations together met and conducted a Memorial Meeting of Mrs. Vijaya Bharathi, at Ambedkar Resource Centre, Samrat Commercial Complex, Hyderabad. Ms. Jhansi Geddam, National Convener of DSS presided over the meeting. Famous writers, poets, leaders and representatives of various organizations, Politicians attended the meeting and spoke about Mrs. Vijaya Bharathi. Important persons that attended the meeting were: Ambassador Vinod Kumar, IFS, Justice Chandraiah, Retired High Court Judge and former Chairperson of SHRC, Sri. Nimma Narayana, District Judge, Prof. Kodanda Ram, M.L.C., Dr. Koyi Koteswara Rao, Prof. K. Sudha Rani, Principal, DBRAOU, Prof. Sujatha Surepally, Sri. Jnaneswar, Dr. Madhavi, Advocate PV Ramana, Advocate Prabhakar, leaders of organizations, Meera, Sangha Mitra, Sri. Katam Raju, Ms. Sajaya, Ms. Gede Jhansi, Indravelli Ramesh, Ommi Ramesh Babu, Dr Mahitha and others.
All the speakers remembered and appreciated how she re-interpreted Telugu literature in the light of Ambedkar-Phule thoughts and appreciated her great work on the life histories of Ambedkar and Phule. Speakers recollected her critical commentaries on scriptures and her writings on social oppression, caste discrimination and women liberation.
Everyone mentioned about her major contribution as editor of the translations of all works of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. She completed writing her auto biography and it is in the final stages of printing and proof reading. All speakers felt that the void created by her demise can’t be fulfilled.
